BF RELINE & MODERNISATION

A plant modernisation or furnace reline designed, planned and executed on the basis of Paul Wurth’s extensive project experience will give you a safe, new furnace campaign at the targeted production parameters.

A furnace modernisation consists in replacement of major equipment or of complete plant units by upgraded and state-of-the-art components and systems. These shall be implemented within existing spaces and structures. The structures have to be adapted or replaced to fit the new requirements. A plant modernisation is therefore characterised by obvious spacing constraints.

A furnace reline is defined as a reconditioning of the blast furnace with limited extent for modification and modernisation. However, also here it is worth considering to apply modern technical solutions taking into account the targeted run time of several years.

In both cases, reline or modernisation, constraints in shut-down duration appear to be crucial very often, especially when it is important to limit the loss of production. Therefore, Paul Wurth can offer different reline strategies, define the modernisation goals together with the customer. We are taking care of sequence planning, scheduling, project set-up and execution management.

With regard to the available raw materials base, the design of the furnace proper is fundamental to reliable operation, metallurgical performance, sustained high productivity and long campaign life. For both new installations and reactor rebuilds, Paul Wurth’s modern blast furnace designs are based on the concept of a free-standing, self-supporting vessel with high-quality refractories and a cooling concept which allows a thin-wall construction over the entire height of the furnace. A surrounding square tower supports the top structure and provides access to the furnace shell and attached equipment.

With more than 230 blast furnace projects for the past 70 years including some more than 150 relines and modernisations, Paul Wurth is the most experienced company on international scale, who is able to combine a full range portfolio of technologies with unparalleled competence in blast furnace design, supply, construction planning and supervision, project management and execution.
