Nucor Chooses Paul Wurth Bell Less Top® Charging Technology

Canonsburg, PA and Luxembourg, 21 October 2008. Nucor Corp. of Charlotte, NC, United States (NYSE: “NUE”) has awarded the Paul Wurth Group a contract for engineering and supply of a new generation two-hopper BLT® charging system for the company’s greenfield ironmaking project on a site still to be determined. Nucor’s first blast furnace is designed for a yearly pig iron capacity of 3 million metric tons.

The design philosophy applied to the new type of two-hopper Bell Less Top®, based on more than 30 years experience in charging technology, focuses on the further reduction of the frequency, duration and extent of maintenance. In addition, the hopper geometry provides optimized burden segregation control and improved raw material flow characteristics. Thus, Nucor has opted for the best available charging technology worldwide, as developed by the demonstrated leader in blast furnace ironmaking technologies.

Since its placement on the market in 2005, the new generation Bell Less Top® charging system has been ordered for 19 blast furnaces on four continents.
