DRAGON STEEL awards construction of a Primus® Recycling Plant to Paul Wurth

Luxembourg, 16 October 2006. For the expansion of their Taichung (Taiwan) steelmaking facilities, DRAGON STEEL CORPORATION has contracted PAUL WURTH for the construction of a new Primus® plant for recycling stockpiled and future fine material (dusts, sludge, etc.) from their existing Electric Arc Furnace shops and from future sinter plants, blast furnaces and BOF steelmaking.

The PAUL WURTH PRIMUS technology is based on a multiple hearth furnace (MHF) – used for pre-heating, calcining and pre-reducing the residues using economical coal, combined with a specially designed electric arc furnace for smelting the charge from the MHF and fuming off the zinc. The Primus process is an innovative solution for recovering separately iron and zinc as added value materials from iron and steelmaking residues: zinc is recovered as zinc oxide, iron as pig iron and gangue materials as inert slag. The Primus process features recovery rates of zinc and iron close to 100% – while complying with the most stringent environmental regulations.

At DRAGON STEEL, the PAUL WURTH PRIMUS plant will feature a nominal recycling capacity of 100,000 tons (dry base) of fine material per year and will be operated with different feed mixes, ranging from 100% EAF dust to a high proportion of blast furnace residues.

Start-up of the plant is scheduled for May 2008 – actually before the start-up of the future integrated plant.

PAUL WURTH is honoured to extend its leading Primus technology for environmental improvement and cost benefit for the steel industry.
