PAUL WURTH IN CONSORTIUM FOR THE CONSTRUCTION
OF NEW BLAST FURNACE AT CST

Luxembourg, 13 July 2004. Brazil’s Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão (CST) is extending its existing steelworks in Serra, ES Brazil, by adding a new blast furnace (BF3) capable of producing 2.8 million t/year of hot metal, which increases its total annual capacity to 7.5 million tons of finished product.

A European consortium between VAI (United Kingdom), Paul Wurth (Luxembourg), and Ferrostaal (Germany), in close association with their respective Brazilian subsidiaries VAI Tecnologia e Industria do Espirito Santo, Paul Wurth do Brasil and Ferrostaal do Brasil, has been awarded the contract for the construction of this new blast furnace.

The turnkey contract covers the design, supply, erection and start-up supervision for No. 3 blast furnace. The scope of responsibility of Paul Wurth includes the design and supply of an innovative 3-hopper Bell-Less-Top blast furnace charging system, the cast iron and copper stave coolers, casthouse equipment, BF probes and the entire gas cleaning plant equipped with a highly efficient axial cyclone instead of a traditional dustcatcher as well as the gas uptakes, off-takes and down-comer.

Blow-in date of the new furnace is scheduled for July 2006.
