A few milestones in the history of Paul Wurth

  • The year 1870 saw the birth of the Paul Wurth Company as a boilermaking facility, known to the townsfolk by the name "Kesselfabrek".

  • In 1891 the business was handed over to Paul Wurth, a young engineer, whose pioneering spirit deeply marked the company's history. Initially, the firm specialised in metal erection works, especially the construction of metal bridges and blast furnace shells.

  • By 1900 the Company employed 40 people … by 1909 the staff was 299.

  • The first 1-meter Grey-beam was manufactured by Paul Wurth in 1907.

  • In 1920 the company was incorporated under the name Société anonyme des Anciens Etablissements Paul Wurth.

  • In 1951 Paul Wurth collaborated with a British steel firm to acquire licenses needed to supply complete blast furnaces with all the accessories. This was the turning point.

  • In 1969 the Paul Wurth engineers invented a revolutionary new blast furnace charging system: the Bell Less Top®. Herewith Paul Wurth held a patent which was of interest to iron & steelmakers the world over.

  • From this time on Paul Wurth had become an international market leader to the ironmaking industry. It created subsidiaries and branches, first in Brazil in 1977, followed by Canada and the U.S. Today the Group has 18 offices in all main steelmaking regions of the world.

  • In 2003 Paul Wurth created together with Dango & Dienenthal Maschinenbau GmbH the joint company TMT Tapping Measuring Technology specialised in the blast furnace tapping and measuring technologies.

  • In 2004 Paul Wurth transferred its fabrication activities within the Arcelor Group to MecanArbed Dommeldange and is now a pure engineering company with a dedicated workshop.

  • On 20 December 2004, Paul Wurth acquired the German engineering company Didier - M&P Energietechnik GmbH, specialized in the field of hot blast stove technologies and refractory and lining concepts for blast furnaces. As from 8 June 2006, the legal name of the company changed to Paul Wurth Refractory & Engineering GmbH.

  • As from 1 July 2005, Paul Wurth S.A. has taken over the blast furnace, coke making and direct reduction activities as well as the staff from SMS Demag S.p.A. in Genoa, Italy. For this purpose, Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A. was created.
