TWO PATH-BREAKING MOBILITY PROJECTS TAKE TO THE TRACK WITH PAUL WURTH INVOLVEMENT

Two path-breaking mobility projects take to the track with Paul Wurth involvement

On 10 December 2017, the new tram came into public service on the first section of its route in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, at the same time as the new Howald and Pfaffenthal train stops, the latter featuring the country’s first funicular. Both projects are considered as cornerstones of the new, sustainable mobility concept of the City of Luxembourg.

Thanks to our long-standing know-how in transport infrastructure, Paul Wurth, through its entity Paul Wurth Geprolux, was closely involved in these prestigious projects.

As part of a consortium, Paul Wurth Geprolux had been commissioned by the operating company Luxtram S.A. to ensure and manage the interfaces between all the different members of the tram project, as well as to coordinate the engineering, procurement and building site activities. With the opening of the first phase of the tram, passengers are able to hop on and off at eight stops between Luxexpo and Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg. The whole route, 16 km from Luxembourg Airport to the Cloche d'Or quarter, is forecast to be completed by 2021.

Paul Wurth Geprolux also supplied project management and assistance to the Luxembourg railway company CFL for the new funicular between the Upper and Lower City as well as for the Pfaffenthal train stop. This construction site consisted of a new station building at the foot of the slope, the platforms and rail tracks, the 200-metre funicular track and the underpass.

Paul Wurth is proud to have participated in these projects that will mark the urban landscape as well as the passengers’ habits in a sustainable way.
